Queen Mary of Denmark stepped out yesterday alongside her mother-in-law, Queen Margrethe, for a culturally significant public engagement. The two women attended the reopening of Copenhagen’s historic Hofteatret. The venue, formerly the Danish Court Theatre, is located within the Christiansborg Palace complex and first opened in 1767. It had been closed for several years while undergoing an extensive restoration.

The reigning queen and the queen emerita are well known for their commitment to culture and their nation's heritage. It came as no surprise that the two attended the awaited reopening together, walking side by side, and showing the close nature of their relationship.

Their looks were stunning and noteworthy. Queen Margrethe opted for a monochrome purple look, wearing a crepe ensemble paired with a shawl to protect herself from the cold.

Queen Mary wore velvet for the elegant occasion

Mary opted for velvet, a fabric that's long been associated with royalty and formal evening events. With its dense texture, soft finish, and distinctive way of reflecting light, velvet is one of the fabrics that best conveys elegance and gravitas. While it has been a staple in royal wardrobes during the festive season, Queen Mary demonstrated that it works just as well beyond holiday celebrations.

What stood out most was the fact that Mary debuted a brand-new dress. Known as one of Europe’s most sustainability-minded royals, she frequently rewears and alters pieces from her wardrobe, particularly evening gowns, using them for different occasions. Still, investing in timeless, high-quality designs is another way to embrace sustainable fashion, as is the case with this gorgeous dress, which will likely be making repeat appearances.

The details of Queen Mary’s velvet dress

The dress is designed by the British label Saloni. Made in navy velvet and decorated with red floral motifs, the design, known as Domino, features a high, Oriental-style neckline. It also features structured shoulders, a defined waist, puffed sleeves with fitted cuffs, and a straight, mid-calf skirt.

Perhaps the most eyecatching part of the dress is the teardrop-shaped cutout at the collarbone, which adds a subtle modern touch without detracting from its elegance. The dress is priced at $915 and is currently available on the brand’s website.

Queen Mary completed the look with blue silk Gianvito Rossi pumps, which she's worn before, and a recycled crocodile-effect Konvo clutch by the brand 1602.
