Prince Nikolai of Denmark is having what can only be described as a dream summer. Though he no longer holds the title of prince nor is he an active member of the royal family, he continues to enjoy France, the country Queen Margrethe chose decades ago as her personal retreat with her family. Now, her grandson has paid tribute to his late grandfather, Prince Henrik, in a strikingly nostalgic way.
Dressed just like Henrik once was, in light trousers and a sky-blue button-down, Count Nikolai was photographed among the rolling vineyards of Château de Cayx, perched along the Lot River near the village of Luzech in France’s Occitanie region. The Danish royal family has summered there since 1974, when Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik made the château their getaway.
The location is meaningful. Prince Henrik, born Henri de Laborde de Monpezat, grew up nearby before marrying into the Danish royal family. While he served as Denmark’s prince consort, his French heritage remained a deep part of his identity.
Each year, the royal family continues the tradition of gathering at this idyllic spot, a favorite of Prince Joachim and his children. The château itself dates back to the 15th century, originally built as a fortress to oversee river trade. Today, its sprawling vineyards produce Malbec reds and Chardonnay whites, wines often poured at Danish state dinners and available to visitors touring the estate.
Even though Nikolai no longer serves as a senior royal, he remains a beloved public figure. Earlier this year, both he and his younger brother, Prince Felix were awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of the Dannebrog.
Beyond his royal ties, Nikolai has carved out a thriving career as a model and brand ambassador, gracing the runways of Copenhagen Fashion Week and other international events, often with his longtime girlfriend, Benedikte Thoustrup, by his side.
