Names have changed over the centuries, including when it comes to dogs. If you’re looking for something truly unique to name your next fur child, why not take inspiration from medieval times? Back in the 15th century, Edward of Norwich, 2nd Duke of York, compiled The Master of Game, the oldest known English hunting guide. Written between 1406 and 1413, the book covered hunting techniques and included a massive list of over 1,000 dog names. Some are regal, some are ridiculous, and a few might even work for your next pet—or, if you’re feeling bold, your next child.

The Master of Game was first printed in modern English in 1904, translated by William and Florence Baillie-Grohman, featuring an essay on medieval hunting and a foreword by then-U.S. President and avid hunter Theodore Roosevelt. Check out some of the epic names below.
