Rising star Mason Thames has done something no actor has achieved in three decades -and he's only 18. Over Halloween weekend, Thames became the first actor since Jim Carrey in 1994 to have three No. 1 movies at the box office in a single year. The streak includes Black Phone 2, Regretting You, and the summer blockbuster How to Train Your Dragon, officially making 2025 the year Thames turned from breakout star to box office powerhouse.

Who is Mason Thames?

Born and raised in Texas, Thames grew up performing and training in ballet before landing acting roles. His first credit on IMDb is a 2017 short, which would have been when he was around 9.

Black Phone 2 is being hailed as one of best horror sequels of all time

He first made waves as the terrified yet brave Finney Blake in 2022’s The Black Phone. His quiet intensity caught Hollywood’s attention, and he became a non-stop booking machine.

It all started this summer when Thames led the live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon, which flew past $636 million worldwide after its June 13 release.

The film’s success showed he could carry a massive franchise with his role of Hiccup. Then in October, Black Phone 2, the chilling Blumhouse sequel, crossed $104 million globally, making it one of just six horror films in 2025 to pass the $100 million mark.

Altogether, his three 2025 films have grossed a staggering $790 million globally - a number that rivals some entire studio slates. He has nearly $953 million in total career box office earnings - and 83% of that coming from this year alone.

According to IMDb, he has two more films on the way: The Shitheads, which is in post-production, and How to Train Your Dragon 2, which is due for 2025.

His personal life

And while his career’s been on fire, Mason’s personal life has been getting attention too. The actor has been dating his co-star, McKenna Grace. They began attending public events together in August 2024 when news surfaced that they would be starring in Regretting You.

After attending basketball games, making TikToks, and soft launches on Instagram, they were spotted hand in hand walking through Soho on Jun 14, 2025. Seemingly confirming their relationship.
