Chrissy Teigen has always been honest about her sobriety. After announcing last May that she was drinking again after being sober for over a year, on Tuesday, she revealed that she has been sober for the last 52 days.
Teigen had Summer House's Carl Radke on her podcast Self-Conscious, where they opened up about their journey with sobriety. Radke got help with Alcoholics Anonymous after abusing alcohol, Adderall, and cocaine, and has been sober for 5 years.
When they recorded the podcast, Teigen was drinking again after being sober for over a year. "Oh, I still talk about the fact that I am not sober anymore and I feel like I’ve let an incredible amount of people down," she admitted. But their conversation left such an impact on her that she said she stopped drinking within the same week.
She shared moments from the episode, explaining in the caption, "I wanted to be able to have a glass of wine on a date night with my husband. To be able to toast on birthdays." Teigen said she thinks that was her first mistake, "Tying drinking to reward or like some sort of life prize."
While she had promised to be "mild", her drinking became "all too familiar," and "Quiet moments at home were for wine." "The time went from 6 pm, to 5, to 4, to aw hell, it’s lunch, why not. When it got to 11 am, I was like, oh fuck, here we go again."
Teigen noted that she wasnt drinking in a way that she was slurring and falling on the stairs, calling it "quiet and consistent." "God, I felt like s**t," she admitted. "I missed being able to pick up my keys for a last-minute grocery run. But it wasn’t messy enough yet to stop."
After talking to Radke, she got sober again. Their conversation came at an important time for her career because she's a judge on Netflix's Star Search, which airs live. "There was absolutely no f**king way I’d do it with alcohol in my dressing room," she continued.
Teigen knows all too well what that would be like. In the episode, the cookbook author opened up about some of her Adderall, coke, and painkiller days, explaining that on Lip Sync Battle, she "was up a lot." "And they knew it, too. I was going through postpartum depression. I was drinking way too much. And they did a good job of protecting me," she explained.
Teigen's sobriety journey
When the mother of 4 first announced she was sober in December 2020, she explained some of the reasons, saying she “was done with making an ass” of herself. “I was done with making an ass of myself in front of people (I’m still embarrassed), tired of day drinking and feeling like shit by 6, not being able to sleep," she said.
Similarly, she told Cosmopolitan in 2017, “I was, point blank, just drinking too much. I got used to being in hair and makeup and having a glass of wine. Then that glass of wine would carry over into me having one before the awards show. And then a bunch at the awards show."
