Sophie Turner has long been a devoted Coldplay fan — and it turns out she once cried over a birthday message from her now-rumored boyfriend, Chris Martin, in a sweet video organized by none other than her ex-husband, Joe Jonas.
The Game of Thrones star, 29, is reportedly dating the 48-year-old Coldplay frontman after the Daily Mail revealed the pair had gone on a “secret date” following her recent split from aristocrat Peregrine “Perry” Pearson, whom she dated for nearly two years. A resurfaced clip from Joe’s 2020 show Cup of Joe shows Sophie being surprised with a birthday message from Chris — years before their reported romance.
In the video, Sophie sits at a restaurant table as Joe, 36, hands her his phone, teasing, “I have someone who wants to say happy birthday.” Moments later, she gasps and covers her face in disbelief. “It’s Chris Martin!” she squeals, grinning.
The Coldplay singer then appears on screen, saying: “This is Chris from Coldplay, I wanted to say on behalf of me and the even more handsome members of our band, have the best day and I’m sending you all my love and I hope you’re having the best time.”
He signs off cheerfully: “Thanks for being awesome, bye,” before blowing a kiss to the camera.
Visibly touched, Sophie laughs through tears, saying, “I’m not going to cry on camera,” before covering her face and handing the phone back to Joe. The former couple share a lighthearted moment, laughing and high-fiving after the emotional surprise.
Sophie and Joe married in 2019 and share two daughters, Willa, 4, and Delphine, 2. They finalized their divorce in September 2024, a little over a year after Joe filed for separation. Turner’s new romance with Martin reportedly began shortly after she and Perry officially split in late September, following weeks of speculation about their relationship. According to insiders, the pair were seen arguing — and passionately making up — at a high-society wedding just before their breakup.
Meanwhile, Chris Martin also recently became single after ending his long-term relationship with actress Dakota Johnson, 35, in June. The couple had been together for nearly eight years and were secretly engaged before parting ways earlier this year.
Martin was first linked to Johnson in 2017, two years after his divorce from Gwyneth Paltrow, 53, with whom he shares two children, Apple, 21, and Moses, 19. Sources told the Daily Mail that Johnson was “devastated” about no longer being around the children “as much anymore, but wants them to know that she is always there for them.”
As for Sophie, she didn’t waste time dwelling on her split. Just a week after ending things with Perry, she was reportedly seen out with Chris. The musician has been spending the summer in London, performing a string of sold-out Wembley Stadium shows as part of Coldplay’s Music of the Spheres tour.
