Amber Heard and Elon Musk began quietly dating following the conclusion of her turbulent marriage to Johnny Depp. A new book claims the pair had a complicated relationship, with Musk claiming that Heard had left him heartbroken.
The book, which remains untitled, reveals that Musk was deeply affected by the breakup, and that the relationship began when Heard and Depp had yet to finalize their divorce. According to The Daily Mail, the book contains statements from different people who knew of Heard and Musk's relationship.
One of Heard's doormen shared that Musk had access to her home, and that in June of 2016, shortly after she had filed a restraining order against Depp, she received a floral arrangement with a note from Musk. "I had a wonderful weekend with you - E," read the message.
That month, Heard surprised Musk on his birthday with a visit to his Tesla warehouse in California. She reportedly hid in the trunk of one of the vehicles and surprised Musk with some flowers she had picked up, with Musk finding the gesture incredibly romantic.
In the following months, the pair began to be spotted together at different events, including a SpaceX launch at Cape Canaveral, with Musk renting a home in Australia to accompany Heard as she worked on "Aquaman." The book alleges that Musk's performance at work began to be impacted.
"It would be a Tuesday night, and she would keep him up all night. There was a blatant disregard for the fact that he had tens of thousands of employees and he had responsibilities," said one of the sources. For her part, Heard didn't appear to trust Musk fully.
"She said he was following her," said one of Heard's friends.
The end of Musk and Heard's relationship
The relationship concluded at some point in 2017, on a trip to Rio de Janeiro, with Heard locking herself in the bathroom and claiming that Musk had taken her passport.
Around that time, in an interview with Rolling Stone, Musk revealed that he and Heard had broken up and that he was emotional about the experience. "I've been in severe emotional pain for the last few weeks. Severe. It took every ounce of will to be able to do the Model 3 event and not look like the most depressed guy around," he said.
Following their split, the pair released a joint statement. "We would like to state directly that we have the utmost respect for one another, and it would be troubling if anyone had the impression that we thought otherwise," it read. "The reality is that this is just a normal relationship with a giant magnifying glass applied."
The two were spotted together again afterwards, with both suggesting that the relationship concluded on good terms.
