Pet of the Week: From Lady to Señorita, this rescue pup wasn’t stubborn, she was just Latina

When a New York family adopted Lady, they thought she was ignoring commands. Turns out, she just speaks Spanish.

To kick off Hispanic Heritage Month, let us introduce you to Lady, a rescue pup who’s not just cute and cuddly, but bilingual. When Becca Kuperschmid and her family adopted Lady over the holidays, they were thrilled. She was sweet, calm, great in the car, and fully house-trained, but she didn’t seem to listen.

Kuperschmid, 23, had been home in New York City for winter break when her family decided to foster a dog from True North Rescue Mission, a group that brings dogs up from Texas to find permanent homes. Within days, it was clear that Lady wasn’t going anywhere.

“She was such a sweet and amazing girl... we were so lucky,” Kuperschmid told Newsweek. But even as Lady settled in, she wouldn’t respond to commands. No “sit,” no “paw,” not even a head tilt, just blank stares.

The Latina jumped out:

That all changed when a family friend visiting from Ecuador suggested that maybe, just maybe, Lady wasn’t being disobedient, but she just didn’t speak English.

In a TikTok shared to Kuperschmid’s account @beckymentality, the friend gives Lady commands in Spanish, and she nails them on the first try. Sit. Paw. All of it.

“We adopted Lady a few months ago and she hasn’t been the best listener...turns out she just speaks Spanish!! LATINA QUEEN,” the caption reads.

One commenter suggested renaming her 'Señorita'

"It’s so funny because I feel like [Lady’s] face immediately lit up,” Kuperschmid said. “Now, if you were to walk into my house today, it’s just my mom attempting every Spanish word under the sun.”

The internet fell in love. One commenter suggested renaming her “Señorita,” while another joked: “Those eyes say, ‘So glad we got over that language barrier!’” Others shared similar stories of language-fluent pets, from Russian-speaking puppies to cats who only respond to Korean.
