The United States' fastest passenger train is finally ready to roll. On August 28, 2025, Amtrak will launch the long-awaited NextGen Acela, starting a new era of high-speed rail travel along the heavily trafficked Northeast Corridor, connecting Boston, New York City, and Washington, D.C.

The initial rollout includes five brand-new trainsets, with all 28 trains expected to enter service by 2027. “NextGen Acela is more than a new train—it’s an evolution of travel,” said Amtrak President Roger Harris. “In just a few weeks, history will be made with the debut of NextGen Acela as we launch a new standard for American train travel.”

Speed and comfort

Top speeds will reach 160 mph. While this might seem like a modest gain, it sets the stage for smoother, faster rides with upgraded onboard tech and significantly improved interiors.

Thanks to a tilt system, passengers can expect a quieter, more stable experience, even at high speeds. Each train offers 27% more seats per departure, yet manages to feel roomier with redesigned business and first-class cabins, larger windows, and warmer lighting.

“NextGen Acela is more than a new train—it’s an evolution of travel,” said Amtrak President Roger Harris.

There’s no economy class on Acela trains, but all travelers benefit from ergonomic seats with winged headrests, individual USB ports, power outlets, reading lights, and free 5G-enabled Wi-Fi.

Culinary upgrades:

Onboard dining is also changing. A grab-and-go café and revived food and beverage cart service will be available across the board, while first-class passengers will enjoy full meals designed by James Beard Award–winning chef Stephen Starr. For those commuting for business or exploring the Northeast for leisure, the experience is designed to rival the convenience of flying.

Booking:

Tickets for the NextGen Acela are available through the Amtrak website, mobile app, and station kiosks, with full support for seat selection, itinerary management, and disruption-change options. For now, Amtrak will operate both legacy Acela trains and NextGen models side-by-side, offering travelers the flexibility to choose.

While Amtrak hasn't released specific fare details yet, customers will receive guidance closer to the launch date on how to select the NextGen options during booking.

A bigger rail transformation:

Amtrak’s broader fleet modernization plan includes the rollout of:

  • Amtrak Airo trains on Northeast Regional, East Coast, and Cascades routes
  • Hybrid-electric locomotives for more sustainable long-distance service
  • Upgraded interiors across coaches, dining cars, sleepers, and lounges, featuring new lighting, cushions, and finishes

The plan aims to rejuvenate Amtrak’s image and improve travel efficiency across multiple regions, not just the Northeast Corridor.
