Giorgio Armani’s farewell fashion show: Here's the designer's last collection


Guests expected a celebration. Instead, it became an arrivederci

Giorgio Armani, the architect of Italian elegance and the man who redefined modern tailoring, managed to have the last word. In a twist both poignant and poetic, the designer who once declared he would never relinquish control orchestrated his final runway, a memorial that became both a goodbye and a celebration of his 50-year reign over fashion.

Armani spent his final months planning what he believed would be an anniversary spectacle: a golden milestone for his brand, staged in the cloistered courtyard of Milan’s Pinacoteca di Brera gallery. Invitations had already gone out for September 28.

The tribute was all Armani. The black-tie dress code was softened with a personal touch as guests received a T-shirt printed with a youthful black-and-white portrait of the designer. Some slipped it beneath tuxedos, a subtle homage to Armani’s fashion revolution.

The front row read like a love letter to Armani’s legacy. Lauren Hutton arrived in a white suit, Cate Blanchett radiated Hollywood glamour, and Richard Gere, forever tied to Armani through "American Gigolo," sat with snowy hair and soft nostalgia.

A Collection of Love and Memory

The show itself reflected two places closest to Armani’s heart. The Brera district, where he lived and worked, and the Mediterranean island of Pantelleria, his sanctuary. Models floated across a pearlescent runway beneath lantern light, accompanied by live piano music from Ludovico Einaudi.

The clothes felt deeply personal. Soft double-breasted jackets and balloon trousers echoed his signature tailoring. Dresses in featherlight organza mirrored the piercing blue of the Mediterranean sea. The collection, titled Pantelleria, Milan, blended his two worlds into a final love letter.

Agnese Zogla, one of Armani’s favored models, closed the show alone in a sweeping blue gown, a fitting punctuation to a career built on fluidity and quiet strength.

A Conversation with Art

Instead of a lavish after-party, guests toured the exhibition Milano: Per Amore, which places 120 Armani designs among Caravaggios and Raphaels at the Pinacoteca di Brera. One display paired Juliette Binoche’s midnight-blue Cannes gown with a Bellini Madonna draped in the same lapis lazuli. Armani’s creations were not just fashion but cultural artifacts, timeless as the canvases they stood beside.

Even in death, Armani left nothing to chance. His succession plan was characteristically meticulous. He instructed that the house could be sold, with LVMH, L’Oréal, and EssilorLuxottica singled out as preferred buyers. For now, his empire rests in the hands of his trusted partner Leo Dell’Orco and his niece Silvana, who leads women’s design. Both emerged at the show’s finale and met with heartfelt applause.

As Cate Blanchett put it, Armani was more than a designer: “Apart from being an incredible designer, he was a humanitarian. He was an incredible philanthropist.”

A Curtain Call That Closed Fashion Week

Armani’s final act was the closing chapter of Milan Fashion Week. As fashion insiders now decamp for Paris, the resonance of his farewell lingers. 

Armani always insisted that style was about continuity, about clothing that outlasted seasons. In orchestrating his memorial, he proved the same of his legacy.
