In a year where runways are reviving maximalism and bringing back excess, standing out through simplicity may seem like a radical act. In 2025, fashion is celebrating oversized silhouettes, dramatic prints, and statement-making layers.

Particularly on red carpets, where method dressing (styling outfits inspired by a role or film) has become the standard, as celebrities often turn their appearances into theatrical showcases.

But Dakota Johnson is moving in the opposite direction, and that’s precisely why she stands out. The actress has become a modern icon of effortless elegance, proving that “less is more” is far from boring. Her minimalist aesthetic, grounded in timeless silhouettes and neutral looks, is redefining what it means to be cool, quietly, confidently, and on her own terms.

Dakota Johnson's latest looks:

In the past few weeks, the star has been promoting 'Materialists,' her latest film co-starring Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal. With each appearance, she’s made a case for understated style as a power move.

In July, she attended the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in the Czech Republic wearing a striking black strapless midi dress by Mugler. The sleek and structured ensemble was paired only with delicate Roberto Coin jewelry.

Earlier, at the Tribeca Festival in New York, she stepped out in an asymmetrical satin gown customized for her by Gucci. This time, the simple yet stylish look was free of pattern or volume, and accessorized with a matching Gucci bag and Messika jewels.

Her minimalist outfits at Cannes:

At the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, a request was made for moderation in red carpet attire, including less volume and fewer sheer panels. Still, the glam factor remained high, with looks like Paris Jackson’s glitter-drenched gown and Natalie Portman’s vintage Valentino drawing attention.

But it was Dakota Johnson’s subtle slip dress that left a lasting impression. Designed by Gucci, the silk piece with dainty straps was paired with simple strappy sandals and a braid framing her signature fringe. No bold jewelry, no elaborate styling, just quiet and sophisticated elegance.

When the moment calls for it, she turns up the drama, but always with precision. At Cannes this year, for the premiere of 'Highest 2 Lowest,' she wore two stunning Gucci creations. The star stepped out in a strapless pink dress adorned with fringe, and a sleek number covered in metallic micro-crystals.

Looking cool without trying:

What sets the actress apart isn’t just what she wears, it’s how she wears it. In a world obsessed with rapid-fire trend cycles, she remains consistent and loyal to tailored blazers, jeans, loafers over stilettos, and neutral colors.

Dakota’s wardrobe is practical, polished, and personal. She dresses for herself and showcases her authenticity. Her style feels wearable and adaptable, like something that could walk right from a press tour into a real woman’s life.

Behind her stylish aesthetic:

Much of this effortless aesthetic comes courtesy of her longtime stylist Kate Young, whose A-list client roster includes Scarlett Johansson and Julianne Moore. But her creative partnership with the actress is one of her longest-running.

Kate describes Dakota’s style as “classic, minimalist, elegant—with just a touch of fashion for daywear.” In an interview with Vogue, she revealed that the star never pulls references from social media. “Dakota’s not like that,” she said. “Sometimes she asks for advice, but it’s always practical."

Her wardrobe regularly features brands like Saint Laurent, Ferragamo, and The Row, but Gucci is especially prominent. Her relationship with the Italian house began in 2017, when she became the face of its 'Bloom' fragrance.

In 2023, she fronted the campaign for the iconic Jackie 1961 bag. Today, Gucci continues to dress her for high-profile events like the Met Gala and international film premieres.

In June, she was also named global ambassador for Roberto Coin, the prestigious Italian jewelry brand renowned for its meticulous craftsmanship. The partnership, set to run through 2027, solidifies her position as a modern style icon.
