Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco’s wedding cake was a mess: Who’s the co-star who ruined it?

Selena Gomez’s wedding delivered romance, celebrity sparkle, and an unexpected cake mishap that instantly became a fan favorite story. When Selena Gomez married Benny Blanco in September 2025, the celebration was intimate, elegant, and filled with close friends. What no one planned was a dessert misunderstanding that would later be revealed on late-night television and quickly earn its place in pop culture wedding lore.

The story came from Martin Short, who attended the wedding alongside fellow cast members from “Only Murders in the Building.” While attending the event, Short was seated in a lounge-style area toward the back of the reception tent. Nearby sat a modest-sized wedding cake.

In his mind, the setup made sense. Multiple seating sections, multiple cakes. Hours passed, the formal cake-cutting had not yet happened, and Steve Martin was preparing to head out. Wanting no one to miss out on dessert, Short picked up a fork and cut into the cake.

That single decision triggered immediate chaos.

The 'Only Murders' Crew Reacts

As soon as the fork hit frosting, the table erupted. Sitting nearby were familiar faces, including Paul Rudd and show creator Dan Fogelman. Their reaction made the situation clear within seconds. This was not a spare cake. This was the cake.

Later, while recounting the story on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Short acknowledged the realization hit hard and fast. “There were big, big tents and at the back of the tents were these individual seating areas with couches and chairs,” the 75-year-old comedian explained. “And there was a cake, a wedding cake, by our section. But it was a small wedding cake.” “I just assumed there was a wedding cake for each section in the back,” he admitted. “After a few hours, they haven’t cut their wedding cake yet… Steve said he was gonna leave.”

How the Wedding Team Saved the Day

Fortunately, the situation never spiraled. The wedding coordinator and chef stepped in quickly, repairing the cake and restoring its polished appearance. What could have been a disaster turned into a minor cosmetic fix, one that Short later joked gave the cake a distinctly Hollywood quality. Martin added that “It ended up being a Hollywood wedding cake: beautiful but now it had a little bit of work done.”

Short admitted he hoped the mishap might stay under the radar. That hope faded when Selena herself addressed it. “I kept saying we can’t let Selena know,” he said, “and then as I was leaving, Selena came by and said, ‘Hey Marty, I heard you tried to eat my cake!’”

Short later shared how meaningful it was to witness her happiness that day. He has long spoken about Selena with affection, describing her as someone deeply cherished within their circle. Seeing her relaxed and joyful mattered far more than a flawless dessert reveal.

Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco tied the knot on September 27, nine months after their engagement. Friends have consistently described the relationship as balanced, supportive, and genuinely happy. In November, Steve Martin also reflected on the wedding during an interview with Entertainment Tonight, praising the celebration and calling Benny a talented and funny match for Selena.
