North West is marching to the beat of her own fashion drum. The 12-year-old daughter of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West has been making headlines for years with her unique looks, most recently stirring up a controversy when she was spotted wearing a corset on their family vacation in Rome in August.
The look went viral, and although Kim did not mention it explicitly, in a recent interview, she said the girly days for North are past her, for now. Kim talked to Complex Style in a video posted to TikTok where she opened up about North's "unique style," admitting her daughter "teaches" her a lot about fashion and brands.
The 44-year-old also pointed out North's self-assured energy when it comes to her style. "She just loves what she loves," she said. "And it’s just really fun to see someone be so creative. And also know herself so much."
Kim reflected on a time when North was trying "really girly outfits" because all of her friends were wearing them. "She tried it with me once. And she wore something really girly. And she was like, ‘Whoa, wait, this isn’t me. I just get that I love dressing a little bit more tomboy-ish," she explained. "And she loves her T-shirts and her jerseys and her jorts."
"She tried it for a good week, to be like, girly or wear what the kids, you know, her friends were wearing. And then she realized quickly, like, ‘This isn’t me,’ and I love that for her," Kim added.
With North officially a preteen, the celebrity kid will turn 13 on June 15, 2026. As she grows up, we are sure to keep watching her style change. Back in 2024, before her brief 2025 girly moment, she described her style to Interview magazine as, “I like streetwear and ’90s. Tyler, the Creator; my dad; me."
While Kim lets North figure out her style, the eldest of four has not always given her mom the same grace. Back in 2023, North went viral when she hilariously roasted her mom's Met Gala look.
"There are way too many gaps in the pearls," North said during a fitting with Schiaparelli creative director Daniel Roseberry. "It looks like she's a Hawaiian girl with her dress all ripped."
North also thought the pearls looked fake, "I like the pearls. I just don't like that it looks like, from the Dollar Store," she said relentlessly.
