Miley Cyrus has released a very special song. Titled "Secrets," the song is dedicated to her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, with whom she'd been involved in a public feud for the past couple of years.
In a post on Instagram, Miley shared some details of the song, including its emotional backstory. "This song was written as a peace offering for someone I had lost for a time but always loved," reads her message. She concluded the post by sharing some of what she's learned over the past years, and thanking some of the band members of Fleetwood Mac, who produced it and helped her craft the song's final sound.
"In my experience, forgiveness and freedom are one and the same. Thank you to Lindsey Buckingham & Mick Fleetwood for bringing magic to the music. This song is for my dad," she wrote.
Billy Ray was deeply moved by the gesture, referencing the song in various posts on social media. “Thank you @mileycyrus for Secrets… a song straight from your heart to mine. The memories we’ve made together mean the world to me, and seeing you soar with your music makes me prouder every single day.”
He'd previously referenced the song on his birthday. "For my birthday, Miley gave me the gift of music and wrote me a song called Secrets and got my favorite musicians Fleetwood Mac to play on it! I love you Mile," he wrote a month ago.
What happened between Miley and Billy Ray?
The Cyrus family experienced some difficulties following the divorce of Billy Ray and Tish, Miley and her siblings' mother. In past interviews, Miley has explained that she supported her mother throughout. "The way that his brain works has always made me feel safer in my own mind because we're very similar in some of our ideas," she said in a 2024 interview with Letterman. "So I think a lot of his perspective on reality and on life, I've inherited from him, more so than the way that I was raised, which, really, my mom raised me."
In an interview this year with Monica Lewinsky, Cyrus revealed that the family rift was very difficult, at times resulting in half of the family not talking to each other. "I just kind of bust through the pile that’s stacked, and just go, ‘I’m here. You’re here. Let’s start by having a good time together,'" she concluded.
