From her early days as a Spice Girl to her current role as a global fashion icon, Victoria Beckham has worn many hats over the years, but her most enduring role may be that of David Beckham's partner for nearly three decades. And now, she’s finally opening up about the real reason their marriage has stood the test of time.
In a candid interview with Elle, the 51-year-old fashion designer reflected on the evolution of her relationship with David, 50. Together since 1997 and married since July 4, 1999, the couple has raised four children, Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz, and Harper, while navigating fame, family, and a fair share of public scrutiny.
According to Victoria, one of the most essential reasons for their longevity is personal growth, not avoiding it. “So often in relationships, one will say to the other, ‘You’ve changed,'" she told Elle. "Well, of course you’ve changed! You’re a different person when you’re 20 than when you’re 50.”
Rather than resisting that change, Victoria credits their willingness to grow together as a couple for keeping their connection alive. While their love story has had its romantic highs, like David’s nostalgic anniversary posts or Victoria’s poolside throwback tributes, it hasn’t been without its challenges.
In her Elle interview, Victoria made it clear that her husband’s support has been unwavering, even in her most vulnerable moments. “He believed in me when a lot of people didn’t. He invested in me,” she said. “At times I’ve been a laughingstock, people not taking my business seriously, but he always believed in me.”
Their mutual support has helped them weather intense periods, including highly publicized rumors. As shown in Netflix’s 'Beckham' docuseries in 2023, the couple spoke openly about the emotional toll the infidelity allegations had on their marriage during David’s time with Real Madrid. “It was the hardest period for us,” Victoria said in the documentary.
“Because it felt like the world was against us... And here's the thing: We were against each other, if I'm being completely honest... But when we were in Spain, it didn't really feel like we had each other either. And that's sad.”
David said, “To see her hurt was incredibly difficult... But, we're fighters. And at that time, we needed to fight for each other, we needed to fight for our family. And what we had was worth fighting for.”
David and Victoria's love story:
Their love story started at a soccer match in 1997, with David proposing just months later in January 1998. The birth of their first son, Brooklyn, in March 1999 was followed by a lavish July wedding that same year.
Fast forward 26 years, and the couple marked their anniversary this July with touching social media tributes. Victoria posted a sweet throwback of the two sharing a kiss in an outdoor pool, writing, "Another year, another chapter in our love story. I'm so proud of the beautiful family and life we've built together. You and our four incredible children complete me. I love you so much @davidbeckham xx Here's to 26 years!! xx."
