Ricky Martin made history and stole the show at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards, becoming the first-ever recipient of the Latin Icon Award, a new category honoring Latin artists who’ve had a global impact on music and culture.
The 53-year-old Puerto Rican superstar received a standing ovation at the UBS Arena in Elmont, New York, as he took the stage with visible emotion, delivering a heartfelt speech dedicated to his children, Matteo, Valentino, Lucia, and Renn.
“I want to dedicate this award to my kids,” Martin said. "Matteo, Valentino, Lucia and Renn, everything I do, I do it with you in my mind and in my heart." Dressed in an all-black look during his performance, the singer made fans excited with some of his hit songs, including 'Livin’ la vida loca,' 'Maria' and 'Vente Pa' Ca.'
The musician reflected on his four-decade-long career during his acceptance speech, reminding the audience of the longevity and power of Latin music.
“It’s been 40 years. Forty years!” he said. “I started working when I was just a baby… and we’re still here.” He continued with a message of unity and passion. “We just want to unite countries. We want to break boundaries. And most of all, we want to keep music alive.”
He also gave a shoutout to his longtime collaborators: “To the incredible people I work with. It’s been many years working together. Let’s keep making music," Martin continued. "I love you.”
Before his performance, the star stole the spotlight walking the red carpet, posing in a silky, light green shirt, stylishly unbuttoned to reveal his toned chest and signature tattoos.
Martin looked remarkably ageless, with many fans taking to social media to comment that he looked just as radiant as he did in the '90s. He completed his red carpet look with layered necklaces and a sharp salt-and-pepper buzz cut.
Ricky Martin’s recognition as MTV’s first Latin Icon is not just a personal milestone but a bigger celebration of Latin music’s global influence. From his early Menudo days to his international breakout with hits, he has consistently pushed boundaries and inspired generations of artists and fans alike.
