Benny Blanco may have a platinum touch in the studio and a diamond ring on Selena Gomez’s finger, but it’s his taste for blueberries that has the internet talking about him.
The 37-year-old music producer and fiancé to the pop star is facing a wave of criticism after posting a TikTok video showing off what he called the "biggest blueberries" he had ever seen, individually wrapped and delivered in a luxury black box with a jaw-dropping $200 price tag.
“This is insane. Look at this blueberry,” Blanco said in the clip. “Oh my God … it’s like a f---ing meal. Can you guys even see the scale of this? They’re f---ing huge. They’re delicious. I think the box is like, $200. That’s crazy.” And just like that, TikTok turned on him.
While Blanco appeared genuinely excited by the extravagant gift, many online weren’t charmed. The video, which quickly went viral, drew backlash for what viewers deemed a "tone-deaf" display of luxury during a time when many are struggling to afford even basic groceries.
“$200 is two weeks’ worth of groceries for me and my family… this is nuts,” one viewer commented. “I gasped at $7.06 for Cotton Candy grapes last week,” another joked. “It’s giving Hunger Games," someone added, “Why do the rich get all the PR packages?”
“It’s giving let them eat cake," an online user wrote. The comment section quickly turned into a public square for economic frustration, with users sharing personal hardships, from delayed maternity leave checks to empty bank accounts. “I don’t even have $200 in my account! Must be nice spending that much just for blueberries,” one person commented.
A few fans came to his defense, pointing out that the multi-platinum producer has earned his lifestyle. “Everyone hating on him because he’s rich and can afford $200 blueberries… he earned his success and money,” one supporter wrote. “Damn, I’m early and getting some fire blueberry content,” another added.
Still, the viral moment showed the disconnect between celebrity lifestyles and everyday realities. Despite his refined palate, Blanco often describes Gomez as refreshingly down-to-earth. In a March 2025 iHeart interview, he gushed that the Rare Beauty founder is “extremely easy to please.”
“We literally play N64 and order Domino’s,” he told Rolling Stone. “There’s not this whole elaborate thing.” His proposal reflected that same unpretentious vibe, a Taco Bell-themed picnic, complete with Gomez’s favorite tortilla chips and even a bathtub full of queso dip for Valentine’s Day. “When your fiancé isn’t much of a flowers girl,” he wrote on Instagram at the time.
