Kelly Clarkson shocked and disappointed fans on Friday evening after calling off the opening weekend of her Las Vegas residency just 90 minutes before she was due to take the stage.
Many fans expressed frustration online over the abrupt cancellation, especially those who had traveled long distances to attend the show.
“I genuinely believe artists should have to reimburse fans that travel for their shows and then cancel at the last minute,” one social media user wrote.
“I do not blame her for canceling as I’m sure it was necessary. But there has to be some repercussion. Something for the people that spent thousands to get there. There has to be some kind of insurance,” another added.
The 43-year-old singer took to Instagram on Friday to explain the sudden decision, saying she and her team had been working tirelessly to craft an unforgettable experience for her dedicated audience.
Clarkson wrote, “The prep and rehearsals have taken a toll on my voice. I want the shows to be perfect for y’all and I need to protect myself from doing serious damage so I am taking this weekend and next week to rest up so that we can deliver what you all deserve.”
She continued, “I am beyond grateful that you always show up for me and I am devastated to have to postpone tonight and tomorrow’s opening at Caesars.”
Despite the delay, Clarkson assured fans that the show is “incredible” and added, “I can’t wait to be back next weekend and show y’all what we’ve been working on.”
Earlier in the day, the "American Idol" winner had shared a behind-the-scenes glimpse on Instagram, featuring herself rehearsing on stage in a backward baseball cap, a cropped black sweatshirt, and leggings.
She captioned the photos, “TONIGHT!! #OpeningNight #StudioSessions #VegasRehearsals.”
According to a press release issued earlier this year, Clarkson's residency, titled Kelly Clarkson: Studio Sessions, includes 18 performances at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace, running through November 15.
