Michelle Trachtenberg's death at the young age of 39 years old shocked fans around the world. The Harriet the Spy star was found by her mother, unresponsive in her New York City apartment, on February 6, and was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency services. Of course, when someone dies that young, there are questions.

Michelle Trachtenberg was loved by many

The New York City Medical Examiner revealed the actress died from complications of diabetes mellitus (diabetes) per TMZ. It’s unclear whether she had type 1 or type 2, but the manner of death has been ruled natural, which means the investigation is now officially closed.

The results come after it was reported that her family opted out of the autopsy for "religious reasons." There was no autopsy performed since there was no suspicion of foul play, but toxicology test results gave additional clarity, according to the medical examiner's office.

After playing the lead role in Harriet the Spy in 1996, she cemented herself as a Hollywood sweetheart

Trachtenberg's passing made a mark on entertainment, with a generation of fans that grew up with her mourning. The results of her passing reveal the serious health issues she was facing behind the scenes. Following her passing, Rosie O'Donnell briefly opened up about it, saying, "I loved her very much. She struggled the last few years. I wish I could have helped."

In the months leading up to her death, Michelle underwent a liver transplant — though it’s still unclear whether that surgery was directly connected to her diabetes.

However, it would make sense, as many liver transplants are done in patients with fatty liver disease, which is linked to diabetes and obesity. Contrary to popular belief, not all diabetic patients look the same and can range in weight and size.

She had fired back at people takinig about her appearance before her death

Her comments about her appearance

In February 2024, she fired back at comments about her appearance, saying, "I’ve received several comments recently about my appearance. I have never had plastic surgery I am happy and healthy. Check yourself haters." "Fun fact. This is my face. Not malnutrition no problems. Why do you have to hate? Get a calendar," the actress wrote on Instagram.

As seen with Trachtenberg, diabetes can lead to serious, even fatal complications.  In some cases, the disease can cause organ failure, especially in the kidneys or liver, or result in dangerous blood sugar imbalances.

It can also trigger diabetic ketoacidosis, a condition where the body breaks down fat too quickly due to a lack of insulin, leading to a toxic buildup in the blood. Any of these can become life-threatening without immediate treatment.

Trachtenberg had not spoken publicly about her health struggles, making the news all the more heartbreaking for fans who grew up watching her on screen.
