Have you been using gel polish for several months and noticed that your nails are becoming more fragile? It's important to note that the gel polish doesn't damage natural nails if applied and removed correctly.

The problem is not the product. Improper technique or inadequate aftercare is often the cause of the issue. So, what can you do if you don't choose the right salon or your nails are already suffering? Experts recommend some powerful solutions: the Japanese manicure and restorative treatments.

What is a Japanese manicure?

According to Sofya Kashanova, co-founder of Siberia Salon, "If you notice your nails are thinner, peeling, or breaking easily, or if their shape or color has changed, it's time to take a break." During the recovery period, she suggests a Japanese manicure, a nourishing and restorative treatment that emphasizes the health of natural nails.

Experts at Vitry also explained that this ritual-driven technique prioritizes care over aesthetics. It is perfect for allowing your nails to take a break from polish and intricate nail art while strengthening and revitalizing them.

The Japanese manicure avoids colorful polishes and utilizes natural, restorative treatments to provide smooth, shiny, and healthy-looking nails. This approach aligns perfectly with the minimalist, clean nail trend.

Sofya also suggests using strengthening polishes enriched with calcium, seaweed extract, keratin, or biotin to hydrate, harden, and prevent peeling. She recommends a two-step kit to restore shine, revitalize the nail plate, and care for cuticles.

What your nails really need: ingredients & care tips

Nail expert Marta Moya shares a few key ingredients and habits that can help you maintain strong nails, even if you regularly wear gel polish:

  • Keep nails short to prevent breakage and boost strength.
  • Apply a nail hardener: Look for formulas with ingredients like neem oil to improve overall nail health.
  • Use products with vitamins F and E to lock in moisture and protect nails and cuticles from external stress.
  • Consider restructuring treatment that creates a glossy barrier and contains nourishing botanicals such as aloe vera, lemon, ginseng, pomegranate, grape, and effective hardening agents like hexanal.
  • Care for your cuticles: Avoid cutting them. Instead, regularly apply cuticle oil to maintain their protective function.
  • Moisturize daily: A hand cream with hyaluronic acid will keep your hands and nails healthy and polished.

How long should you let your nails rest?

If your nails are only slightly damaged, taking a break of 2 to 3 weeks is usually sufficient.

However, if the damage is noticeable, Sofya recommends waiting until the entire nail grows out, which can take 4 to 6 months. In general, it's a good idea to take regular breaks between gel manicures.

A one-week rest between applications can make a significant difference, although the ideal duration may vary depending on your nails and the advice of your technician.

Where the real damage from gel polish begins

Marta Moya, co-creator and partner at MIA Cosmetics Paris, explains that "gel manicures can cause damage if the technician over-files the natural nail, whether with an electric tool or a regular file." Aggressive removal is just as risky. "Filing already weak nails makes them thinner and more vulnerable after the gel is removed," she warns.

And that's not all. According to Marta, using pure acetone or harsh removers can dehydrate the nails, and scraping off the residue with metal tools or excessive filing can lead to long-term damage.

The good news? These effects are preventable and treatable with the right products and nail care practices.

So next time your nails need a break, skip the acrylic fixes and embrace the clean, elegant look of healthy, natural nails.
