Kahi-nam vegetable ‘caviar’

A caviar-like vegetable? Yes, please! Kahi-nam is a tiny aquatic plant that is praised for having the properties of cauliflower, spinach, and broccoli, a super three-in-one! It is widely consumed in Asia, where it originated, and they compare it to a “green caviar.” The benefits? It has high levels of magnesium, iron, fiber, vitamins and antioxidants.

Kiwi, star and dragon fruit

Exotic fruits are another great superfood, including kiwi, star fruit, and dragon fruit. All three of them provide similar benefits, like vitamins, minerals, and fiber, which can help you lose weight.

You can snack on them on their own or use them in as energizing smoothies. For those who like to get innovative in the kitchen, you’ll find it interesting to enjoy dragon fruit sauteed with your favorite meat or protein.

Turmeric

Surely you’ve heard people talk about the famous spice turmeric. It really is “magical” because of its anti-inflammatory ability. It is highly recommended in Chinese and Indian medicine, because according to a study published in Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition, curcumin, the active antioxidant in turmeric, can help protect the heart and the immune system, and improve our metabolism.

There are a lot of ways we can eat it since it comes in various formats. For an easy recipe, add it to your morning coffee or to some scrambled eggs with spinach.

Super sprouts

Are you a broccoli addict? Well now you’re going to become even more addicted, but not to the florets, but the sprouts, since they’ve become the new detox trend. They're very nutritious inteas, salads, or on their own.

According to Sunday Edit, Sarah Morgan, CEO of Even Health Co, broccoli sprouts increase the production of antioxidants in the body and they are considered food superheroes that fight inflammation.

Moringa

As leaves, powder, or capsules: there are many ways you can find the famous moringa, also called the tree of life, which aside from being known as a way to treat or prevent certain illnesses and even anemia, has become a dietary ally that provides a lot of energy.

Its fresh leaves can be eaten raw or cooked, similarly to spinach. Alternatively, the dried or ground leaves are perfect for making tea, adding to a curry, or taking in capsule form.

Medicinal fungi

Are you someone who has been looking for a good alternative you can substitute for meat? Fungi are one of the best. The wide variety that exists offer vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that protect the immune system.

Kimberly Snyder, author and founder of Solluna, a health supplement company, shared with Sunday Edit, that in 2020 the category of medicinal fungi – like chaga, reishi, and shiitake mushrooms – will be even more popular this year their numerous beneficial properties.

Hop water

To finish off this list of superfoods, we can’t forget to mention non-alcoholic drinks, with this year’s star entry, hop water. Hops, used to make beer, is great for reducing anxiety in its non-alcoholic form, and hop water is gluten free and carb free. Another top choice for a superdrink is non-alcoholic gin, which is low in calories and made with botanicals like juniper, coriander and ginger.
