Prince Harry and Meghan Markle kick off royal wedding year in the French Riviera

It’s set to be a big year for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle! The engaged couple kicked off 2018 with a romantic trip to the French Riviera — five months before their wedding. The British royal and American actress were spotted on board a British Airways flight bound for Nice at 9.55 a.m. on New Year’s Eve (Sunday, December 31), according to the Daily Mail.

In an effort to keep a low profile, the pair boarded the aircraft ahead of the other passengers and sat in the rear of the plane, next to the toilets. Accompanied by three “edgy and nervous” bodyguards, the group took up the last three rows of the economy seats on both sides of the aisle. Harry, 33, sat next to the window with a baseball cap pulled down over his face, while his fiancée sat next to him wearing a black beanie hat and minimal make-up.

The Daily Mail reports that the pair celebrated New Year's Eve "‘partying like tycoons" with friends. There was speculation that the group may have included Prince Albert of Monaco and his wife Princess Charlene. Meghan and Harry reportedly flew out of Monaco on Tuesday, January 2, on board a helicopter.

The South of France was surely the perfect spot for Meghan to begin working on her New Year's resolutions. The 36-year-old revealed in 2016 that she makes the same resolutions every year, which include re-learning French. Writing on her now closed blog The Tig, Meghan penned, “Stop biting my nails. Stop swearing. Re-learn French. These make my New Year's resolution list nearly (AKA actually every) single year. The swearing comes in lulls triggered by being overworked or feeling mighty cheeky after a couple drinks. And when it comes to the biting of the nails - well, it still happens with a turbulent flight or a stressful day. It's unladylike. But then again, so is the swearing."

Meghan and Harry's romantic getaway comes after the TV star celebrated her first Christmas with Harry’s family at Sandringham. Prince William's brother and the Suits alum, who announced their engagement in November, are set to wed May 19 at St. George's Chapel, Windsor Castle. The pair will carry out their first engagement of 2018 on Tuesday, January 9, visiting the youth-led radio station Reprezent 107.3FM in Brixton, South London.
