The sun rose brightly, fans gathered excitedly and whimsical tents have been pitched! Coachella sprung up for the 20th time in Indio, California on Friday, April 12, exuding its usual bohemian glory. Beckoning the world's hottest stars, the 2019 edition of the annual two-weekend art and music festival has already outdone itself. Between starry headliners like Ariana Grande and J Balvin to festivalgoers Gigi Hadid and Alessandra Ambrosio, this year was set to be bigger than ever. Scroll through to see all the stars that turned up on weekend one!

The main event

Ariana Grande closed out week one of the popular music festival with a star-studded performance. The Thank u, Next singer took the stage with Nicki Minaj, Diddy and Mase, but it was four popular boy band members who helped her live her dream.

After a performance of her hit, Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored, JC Chasez, Lance Bass, Chris Kirkpatrick and Joey Fatone of *NSYNC graced the stage and surprised the crowd. The popstar (who has always been a big fan of the group) joined them as they performed Makes Me Ill and Tearin’ Up My Heart.

Following the performance, Justin Timberlake, who missed the show because of his Man of the Woods Tour, gave everyone his blessing. An *NSYNC insider told HOLA! USA that the conversations started a week before the big show and was arranged when Ariana reached out to JC – who has always been her "favorite" member of the band.

Ariana joined the foursome backstage for some more photos. During the performance the insider added how JC had some technical difficulties but recovered quickly. "JC’s monitors went out on stage – everything he was singing he couldn’t hear," the source shared. "He would stop to hear the beat so he was in step and on point.”

Despite the glitch, their performance received so much attention and praise that it had people asking what's next of the group. "It was amazing to see backstage; all the artists coming up to them. Diddy and others kept asking when they are going to do something.”

The source continued: "Ariana was even overheard telling JC that they should try to do something soon. JC replied, 'You know where to reach me.'"

What a mashup!

J Balvin had some help, amping the style and the crowd during his set. The Mi Gente singer brought out fellow reggaeton musician and friend Bad Bunny during his performance.
