A Who’s Who of British TV talent turned out for the BAFTA Television awards at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel, hosted by Des Lynam. Age and experience had the edge over youth as veteran performers triumphed over their younger rivals for many of the most coveted prizes.

Dame Thora Hird won Best Actress for her role as Annie Longden in the moving ITV drama, Lost For Words. And Caroline Aherne, who won Best Comedy Performance award, was unofficial queen of the evening with The Royle Family, the comedy series she co-writes, continuing its reign as one of the most innovative programmes on TV. The programme also won Best Situation Comedy at the awards.

One comedian who lost out was Ali G’s alter-ego, Sacha Baron Cohen. It was widely expected that The Ali G Show would scoop Best Entertainment Performance, but he lost out to another Channel 4 performer, Graham Norton.

EastEnders won Best Soap for the second time in a row, and eight of the show’s stars, including a pregnant Patsy Palmer and the recently-departed Sid Owen, trooped up on stage to collect it. And a Special Award went to the glamorous quartet of Honor Blackman, Joanna Lumley, Linda Thorson and Dame Diana Rigg, honored for the contribution to television as The Avengers high-kicking heroines.
