The rare title of Princess Royal

The current holder, Princess Anne, may be followed by little Princess Charlotte

Princess Anne, only daughter of the late Queen Elizabeth II,  has long been lauded as the hardest-working member of the British royal family, reportedly attending a whopping 214 official engagements in 2022 alone (a slim figure compared to the 506 she racked up in 2019!). And she is also the recipient of one of her country's more unusual titles.

Although it’s very common for the King or Queen to award titles to royal brides and grooms on their wedding day, Anne and her first husband Mark are thought to have refused an Earldom when they got married in 1973. Then, when it came to rumoured offers to award their two children Zara and Peter royal titles, Anne and Mark stood firm. Their daughter revealed that she is grateful for this decision, telling The Times in 2015: “I’m very lucky that both my parents decided to not use the title and we grew up and did all the things that gave us the opportunity to do.”

Finally, in 1987, when she was 36, Anne accepted the high honour of being named Princess Royal. Typically given to the eldest daughter of the reigning monarch, it has only been held seven times since it was first created by Charles I to give to his daughter, Princess Mary, in 1642. Once awarded, this title is kept for life, but it isn’t passed down to the next generation.

As the eldest daughter of King George VI, Queen Elizabeth II would technically have qualified for the Princess Royal title. So why did she never receive it? Well, because the title had already been awarded to her aunt, Princess Mary, who held it until her death in 1965, over 12 years after Elizabeth became Queen. After Mary’s death, the title was unoccupied until it was given to Anne all those years later in 1987.

Now it is Princess Charlotte, the heir apparent Prince Williams’s only daughter, who could be in the running to become the next Princess Royal when her father becomes King.
