Royals against wardrobe waste

These ladies show how to rewear favourite pieces with style

Would you wear a special outfit more than once? If the answer is no, you’re not alone. A survey carried out by the charity Barnardo’s in 2019 found that 25 per cent of people would be embarrassed by wearing occasion wear more than once, a figure that rises to 37 per cent among those aged between 16 and 24.

But as Kate, the Princess of Wales, Queen Letizia of Spain and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands all show, it can take just a few fresh accessories and a different hairdo to completely transform your look.

Kate is often in the spotlight for her thrifty fashion choices. Her blue shift dress by British designer Stella McCartney, for instance, has been spotted at least four times over the years. But she styles it differently each time she wears it. At a National Portrait Gallery event in 2012, the newly married royal opted for an oversized necklace, dark heels and a bouncy blow dry. Four years later, accompanied by her first child Prince George, she complemented it with a dark blazer, light pumps and an Alice band that pulled her hair off her face.

A tartan Alexander McQueen coat dress has made a similar number of outings: first seen in 2012, when she went for black ankle boots and natural curls, it was spotted again in 2019 during a trip to Dundee in Scotland. Effortlessly chic, the Princess styled the timeless piece with black gloves and matching shoes, wrapping up warm with a green scarf.

Down-to-earth Kate wins praise with her recycled wardrobe. The royal fan behind the Instagram account @reallifeprincessofwales wrote last year: “I absolutely adore how Catherine restyles pieces from her closet… It not only makes her relatable, but so many of her pieces are so beautiful they deserve more than one outing! Plus I would say she is a master of giving a piece a new life with just a few tweaks.”

Queen Letizia of Spain, 50, is another royal who excels at this. Her wardrobe is a mix of designer and high-street brands, and has even been known to incorporate vintage pieces from her mother-in-law Queen Sofia’s closet! Over a 12-month period eagle-eyed fans spotted her wearing a pastel pink floral dress from Asos four times, and she looked stunning on each appearance.

She's particularly skilful in using her glossy long locks to change a look. At an official engagement that welcomed the Chinese president and his wife to Madrid in November 2018, the brunette beauty wore her Asos number with her hair brushed back in a sleek chignon.  The following May she wore the dress again with similar simple accessories, but this time with her hair styled in a side-parting that framed her face perfectly.

The Queen of the Netherlands, Argentine-born Maxima, has an equally assured sense of style. She dazzled in a jewelled mustard Oscar de la Renta dress at an official engagement in 2019, 13 years after it first appeared during a tour of Belgium alongside her husband. Back in 2006, the then-Crown Princess set it off with exuberant accessories including chunky bangles. More recently, she toned down the outfit with an understated clutch bag and heels.

The royal ladies’ sustainable fashion choices send out an important message about fast fashion and consumerism. Accessories and hairstyles can make a huge difference to a look – and allow you to rewear your favourite pieces with pride.
