Camilla’s idea of a relaxing afternoon

The Queen Consort is a serious bookworm!

According to her official website, Camilla, the Queen Consort (1), has become the patron or president of roughly 100 charities since she married the now King in 2005, and she dedicates much of her time to public engagements in support of these organisations. And with preparations for Charles’s May coronation in full swing, we can only expect that Camilla’s schedule is more jam-packed than ever. So, we wonder, what is her idea of perfect relaxation after all that hard work?

In a rare interview with Vogue, the 76-year-old detailed what she likes to do when she gets an afternoon to herself. The nature-loving royal said: “I would do a bit of gardening, go for a walk and then I’d sit down and read a book. It would be my idea of heaven, in the quiet countryside, where you can generally relax and properly think." Bliss (2)!

Camilla is an avid (3) reader, and the founder of the charity The Queen’s Reading Room, which began as an Instagram page where the royal would talk about titles she particularly enjoyed and interview authors. Its mission statement explains that it is an organisation that aims to open adults and children to the wonderful world of literature by providing free resources and book recommendations. Camilla is also the patron of the National Literacy Trust and Book Aid International.

It should come as no surprise, then, that there’s nothing the Queen Consort likes better than getting stuck into a good book when she has some downtime (4). In an interview with her charity, she describes how books have enriched her life: “To me reading is a great adventure, I have loved it since I was very small and I would love everybody else to enjoy it as much as I do. You can escape, and you can travel, and you can laugh and you can cry. Every type of emotion which humans experience is in a book.”

So what sort of thing might she be reading? In July 2022 she revealed her favourite reads to Country Life. The list includes the international bestseller Where the Crawdads Sing, by Delia Owens, and her desert island choice: All Change, the fifth book of The Cazalet Chronicles by Elizabeth Jane Howard.

Camilla shares her passion for reading with her husband, King Charles. She looks forward to the holidays, when they get the opportunity to put their feet up and sit companionably reading their books together, whiling the afternoon away (5).
