They’ve been married for 35 years, have two adult children and are still head-over-heels in love. So it’s hardly surprising that Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick's fans want to know their secret.
Twelve-year-old Kyra first laid eyes on her future husband when he was 19 and she saw him perform at the downtown New York Cherry Lane Theatre. It was a whole decade later, in 1987, that romance blossomed, on the set of the television film Lemon Sky.
It wasn’t love at first sight for both of them. In an interview with Piers Morgan in 2014, the Footloose star talked about his first impressions of Kyra. “I found her, you know, really very beautiful and sexy and aloof,” he said, “and I was just immediately in love with her and she was just immediately put off by me.” Fortunately Kyra's opinion soon changed, and before long she knew deep down that she and Kevin were made for each other.
They married in September 1988. Just two weeks after saying "I do" Kyra became pregnant with their first child. Since then, they've built a family as well as impressive screen careers.
Although part of the pair's success comes down to luck, they are the first to admit that there's a lot of work involved too. Compromise is key. In a joint interview with Glamour in 2019, Kevin acknowledged that his wife has made more sacrifices than he has. “Kyra felt really strongly that, when she started to have children, she needed to be there for them. In many cases, because of the kids, she would make decisions that weren’t the best for her career,” he revealed.

As her number one supporter, he encouraged her to accept a starring part in the series The Closer, for which she received both a Golden Globe and an Emmy. And he spotted her talent for directing before she realised it herself. He explained: “For years I encouraged Kyra to direct, because I really thought she’d be great at it and would enjoy it,” adding “I’ve never seen her in work situations to be as happy as she is when she’s directing.”
The actors don’t argue often, but their relationship isn't always smooth sailing. One protracted row in the late 1990s was over moving house – Kyra was desperate to return to Manhattan, but Kevin was keen to stay in the countryside. They solved the problem by investing in both a farm and a city flat! “This is our lives, we’ll make it work,” is their mantra.
Although the couple's days together may seem like a whirlwind of red-carpet glitz, they're actually very grounded. Back in 2019 the actress told Glamour: “There’s diapers to be changed and shopping to be done and toilet paper to pick up. There’s a lot of monumentally unsexy things about being married for 31 years.”
Kevin and Kyra certainly don't hold themselves up as models, nor can they say exactly why their relationship works when so many others fail. They're just thankful that it does.
