In defence of Nepo Babies

It seems that even with family connections, showbusiness success takes work

The term Nepo Babies, which refers to the famous offspring of celebrities, is a trending topic on social media,  with endless people weighing in (1) on whether the careers of these up-and-coming stars should be credited to nepotism rather than their own merit.

So what do the so-called Nepo Babies themselves say about it?  Leni Klum, the 18-year-old daughter of supermodel Heidi, is following directly in her mum's footsteps, but says that doesn't mean the path is easy.

In a recent interview with People, Leni admits that she “did get help starting off” in modelling,  and is “so grateful” for that. But she insists she is “doing the work and putting in the time”. Nor is she depending on her catwalk (2) career, but is also studying for a degree in interior design.

And being the child of celebrities brings its own challenges (3). Speaking to GQ, Little Lies star Zoë Kravitz, daughter of musician  Lenny Kravitz and actress Lisa Bonet, revealed that following her parents into entertainment brought her a “deep insecurity”, though she is proud to join what she calls “the family business”.

After decades as a Hollywood A-lister, Gwyneth Paltrow has had plenty of time to consider the matter. She's the daughter of an actress - Blythe Danner - and a director Bruce Paltrow - so no one could say she lacked connections. Did that help when she was starting out?  Speaking on Hailey Bieber’s series Who’s In My Bathroom?,  Gwyneth explained that your parents may help you “unfairly” get your “foot in the door”, but once it is in there “you have to work almost twice as hard and be almost twice as good, because people are ready to pull you down (4)”.

At the end of the day, for the Nepo Babies, gratitude is key, according to Paris Brosnan, youngest son of James Bond actor Pierce. In an interview with E! News, he tells us that he thinks “we just need to be grateful for our blessings…It’s always going to be there and we got to recognise it. At the end of the day, we’re just grateful (5) to be here.”

1. To weigh in on = To forcefully give an opinion
2. Catwalk = Path models walk during a fashion show
3. Challenge = Situation that tests one's abilities
4. To pull someone down = To degrade or humiliate someone
5. Grateful = Thankful
