The secrets of Adele's great new shape

These tips contributed to the success of the pop star's fitness regime

Adele has always had body confidence, and wants her fans to have it too. The mum-of-one has stressed (1) that she didn't lose weight to fit in with other people's ideas of what an ideal body looks like, but to feel fitter and more energised.

Do it for yourself

Her former personal trainer Pete Geracimo says: "My hope is that people appreciate the hard work that Adele has done to improve herself for the benefit to her and her family only... She is doing it for herself and for her son Angelo."

Focus on fitness not figure

Pete adds: "When Adele and I started our journey together, it was never about getting super-skinny. It was about getting her healthy. Especially post-pregnancy and post-surgery. When her album '25' dropped and the tour was announced, we had to get ready for a 13-month gruelling (2) schedule. In that time, she warmed (3) to training and made better food choices."

Mix it up

Varying your work-out regime not only provides different body benefits, it also keeps you from getting bored.

Adele revealed that she trains with weights in the morning, goes for a hike (4) or boxes in the afternoon, and does a cardio work-out in the evening.

Small changes, big results

Look for those changes that make the most difference for the least effort.

Adele cut out the sugar she added to her tea. Like a typical Brit, she drinks a lot of tea, so by drinking it without sugar, she reduced her sugar intake dramatically. She says: "I used to drink tea cups a day with two sugars in each, so I was on 20 sugars a day."

As a bonus, drinking tea and coffee without sugar helps to train your palate to expect less sweetness, so you may then find it easier to cut down on other sweet treats (5).

1. To stress = To emphasise
2. Gruelling = Tough, requiring endurance
3. To warm to = To become more enthusiastic about something
4. A hike = A long country walk
5. A treat = Something pleasurable outside one's usual routine
