Camilla at 75

The Duchess of Cornwall is at a great time in her life

For much of her adulthood Camilla was a controversial figure, thanks to her relationship with Prince Charles during his marriage to Diana. But now, as she turns 75, and after 17 years as the Prince’s wife, it’s clear that she has both won over (1) the British people and gained the firm approval of the Queen. Indeed, Her Majesty recently asked that Camilla be named Queen Consort when Prince Charles ascends the throne.

This brings into sharp focus the fact that, at a time when most people have retired (2), the Duchess is approaching the busiest years of her life. But she isn’t fazed (3), viewing the challenges to come with her typical calm, positivity and humour. As she said in an interview with Vogue to mark her milestone: “I let birthdays come and go… I suppose what I think is, ‘I’m quite lucky that I’m still around.’”

She looks more stylish than ever these days, and she radiates contentment at her Prince’s side. The couple share not only a deep affection but a devotion to public service. As well as tirelessly supporting Charles on engagements at home and abroad, Camilla works hard on behalf of (4) causes that aren’t glamorous, but where she feels she can really make a difference. Osteoporosis, domestic abuse and literacy are all priority areas for her.

Off-duty, she has very similar interests to her husband. She loves to spend time with her grown-up (5) children, Tom and Laura, and her five grandchildren. Her “idea of heaven” is to “do a bit of gardening, go for a walk, then sit down and read a book… in the quiet of the countryside”. So Prince Charles’s beautiful Gloucestershire home, Highgrove, where he grows organic fruit and vegetables, must be paradise for her.

With a loving relationship, important work to do and the perfect place to unwind when needed, Camilla has much to enjoy at 75.

3. To be fazed = To be daunted.
