Ten facts about Prince William

To celebrate his 40th birthday, we offer extra insight into this future King:

1. He made his grand debut on 21 June 1982 in St Mary's Hospital in London, where his own three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis would all be born three decades later.

2. He travelled abroad (1) for the first time when he was just nine months old, joining his parents Prince Charles and Princess Diana on an official visit to Australia and New Zealand in 1983. 

3. An accident in 1991 left the Prince with what he calls his 'Harry Potter' scar, still visible today. A school friend hit him on the forehead with a golf club during a game.

4. In 2000, the Prince spent ten weeks in Chile on a Raleigh International expedition. He slept under the stars, danced salsa with villagers and tracked (2) rare deer. 

5. Prince William attended St Andrews University in Scotland, where he studied geography – after switching (3) from his initial choice, history of arts, the course on which he met his wife-to-be Kate.

6. In 2008, he joined the Royal Air Force. He was known by his fellow airmen as 'Billy the Fish', a pun (4) on the name 'William Wales'.

7. His first dance with Kate at their 2011 wedding was to Ellie Goulding singing a cover of the Elton John classic Your Song.

8. One of the cakes served at their wedding was his favourite ‘chocolate biscuit cake’, made using plain biscuits and dark chocolate, and cooled in the fridge rather than baked. 

9. Following in his mother's footsteps, William is a patron of Centrepoint, which was set up (5) to help homeless people. To demonstrate the conditions faced by them he once slept on the street in central London for a night.

10. Since becoming a father, William says he is "a lot more emotional than I used to be… Just because you realise how precious life is."
