Elizabeth and Victoria: a tale of two Queens

As Elizabeth II marks 70 years on the throne, she draws comparisons with her great-great-grandmother Victoria, who reigned from 1837 to 1901 .

Queen by chance
Queen Victoria’s father Prince Edward was fourth in line after his three older brothers, but none of them had children, leaving his daughter to inherit the crown. Princess Elizabeth’s uncle, King Edward, abdicated – putting the crown on her father’s head, and in due course (1) her own.

Love match
Victoria was just 16 when she fell for her first cousin. She deemed the German Prince Albert an “angel”, who was both clever (2) and determined.  Elizabeth was smitten with a more distant cousin, Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark, from the tender age of 13. Both Queens had good instincts, with their chosen husbands proving to be loyal consorts and dedicated fathers. “No mention of the Queen is complete without paying tribute to my grandfather, Prince Philip, who has devoted his life to supporting her,” Prince William once said.

Matriarch
Victoria and Albert had nine children— five girls and four boys, and portraits of the royal family are pictures of domestic bliss (3). Elizabeth and Philip are parents of four, with eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Both Queens stressed the importance of a mother’s role; during her honeymoon (4), Elizabeth wrote to her parents, “I only hope that I can bring up my children in the happy atmosphere of love and fairness which I have grown up in.”

Devoted to duty
Queen Victoria’s reign characterised a period of British history; the Victorian era was an “epoch of progress,” as Victoria herself called it. Apart from a period of seclusion after her husband’s early death, Victoria was an active and present monarch. The same, of course, is true of Elizabeth, who, at age 96, still carries out public engagements.

Four-legged friends
Victoria was known for her love of all animals, particularly dogs and horses, and took up (5) riding in middle age. The same can be said of our Queen, who was still riding well into her 90s and treats her pet corgis like members of the family.

1. In due course = As events naturally develop
2. Clever = Intelligent
3. Bliss = Absolute happiness
4. Honeymoon = Newlyweds’ holiday
5. To take up = To adopt an activity
