David was born in London in 1926, and had two brothers, one of whom was the acting legend Richard Attenborough.

After studying natural sciences at the University of Cambridge, he made his name creating TV documentaries unlike any seen before. Fascinating and moving (1) series like 1979´s Life On Earth brought the wonders of the natural world and its creatures into our living rooms.

In 1985, he became Sir David when he was honoured for his work with a knighthood. Many species have been named after him, including a dragonfly, an Ecuadorian flowering tree and two types of spider.

Still working tirelessly (2) in his tenth decade, lately he has honed (3) his focus on environmental issues. Urging us to be kinder to Mother Nature, he has advocated for eating less meat, using renewable energy and restoring planetary biodiversity.

Among his patronages are the World Land Trust, which protects tropical forest and other threatened habitats. He is also an ambassador for the World Wildlife Fund.

A great friend of Britain’s royal family – he is the same age as the Queen - in 2021, Sir David joined Prince William's Earthshot Prize Council as a member.

He also acted as the host (4) at last year’s COP26 summit, where he urged (5) leaders to commit to the 1.5C temperature limit.

Speaking of humankind’s effect on the Earth he said: "If working apart we are forces powerful enough to destabilise our planet, surely working together we are powerful enough to save it."

Sir David was married to his wife Jane for 47 years until her death in 1997. He has a son and daughter, Robert and Susan.
