Ed Sheeran tells how the weather almost wrecked his proposal plans

World-famous British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran should be well used to the unpredictable weather in his home country, especially during the winter. But optimism won over experience when he planned his proposal to the love of his life, Cherry Seaborn, to take place just before New Year 2018.

Shivers hit singer Ed told Swedish talk show Skavlan how he had planned a big romantic gesture in the garden of his Suffolk home, even building a pergola where he was hoping to get down on one knee at sunset, but the weather meant that it almost didn't happen.

Thirty-year-old Ed has explained: "On the day it was pissing down with rain and I'd built a [expletive] pergola at the end of the garden to do it. Sunset, pergola, some wine... and it was pissing down with rain.

"I kept saying, 'We should go for a walk', and Cherry was like, 'No!'. I was like, 'Are you sure you don't want to go for a walk?'"

He added that he delayed the proposal for a few hours but eventually popped the question (1) at 9pm in the evening. "Time was ticking. There was a date engraved on the ring and I was like, 'I've got to do it today!'"

He revealed too how emotional he felt when the moment finally came, and he was in suspense (2), waiting for Cherry, 29, to give him an answer.

"I was getting down on one knee and I said, 'Will you marry me?' And she was like, 'Are you [expletive] joking?' There was this long silence and I just went, 'Please?'

"It is the most human I have ever felt.

"It is such a huge life decision someone has to make in the blink of an eye. Thankfully, she did say yes."

Ed and Cherry, who have known each other since their school days, have never revealed their exact wedding date, but they confirmed in July 2019 that they were now husband and wife.

In Ed’s track Remember the Name on his No.6 Collaborations Project album, a lyric said: "Watch how the lyrics in this song might get twisted (3)/My wife wears red but looks better without the lipstick."

The low-key (4) couple didn’t opt for a big showbusiness-style ceremony. Apparently, their "tiny affair" took place "at a random (5) day in the middle of January, in the middle of nowhere."

The couple are now parents to one-year-old daughter Lyra, and the family live at their £3.7million estate in Suffolk, which includes a lake, a treehouse, an underground music room, a chapel and even a pub.

1. Pop the question = Ask someone to marry you
2. In suspense = Waiting in uncertainty
3. Twist = Bend into a convoluted shape
4. Low-key = Understated, fuss-free
5. Random = Without order or reason
