FASHION TEAMS UP WITH MUSIC AT THE VH1/VOGUE FASHION AWARDS

Fashion and music are two of the most potent forces in the world today - and when they get together, well, just look at the interest a style-setting pop star like Posh Spice commands. So it’s not surprising that the fashion awards run by music station VH1 and Vogue are a huge hit.

Held in New York, this year’s glamorous ceremony attracted a whole raft of celebrities - including, needless to say, Posh Spice. Her colleague ‘Baby’ Emma Bunton was there too among a host of other Brits, some of whom walked away with an award, designed this year by shock-artist Jeff Koons, who also designed the famous flowering puppy outside the Guggenheim museum in Bilbao.

Although actor Jude Law missed out on a Best Supporting Actor at this year’s Oscar ceremony, the dapper Englishman, who is married to Sadie Frost and about to become a father for the second time, walked off with the Male Celebrity Style award.

But it was another Brit, albeit an Anglo-American, who stole the headlines - and the show. Stella McCartney was voted Designer Of The Year and stood on the stage in apparent shock as her father, ex-Beatle Sir Paul, emerged from the shadows to a standing ovation, to present her with her gong.

“Well, I’d better thank him,” said his youngest daughter. “And I would like to thank my mum. I give this to her,” she said, clad in a sexy strapless dress from her latest collection, which was inspired by her mother Linda’s love of horses. Strawberry blonde Stella evoked memories of the passsionate animal rights supporter, who died two years ago, when she finished her acceptance speech by asking the audience to steer clear of buying fur coats.

Nevertheless, there was a star-studded guest list for the ceremony-goers to gawp at. As well as Victoria Beckham and Emma Bunton, who had a new Spice Girls single to promote and were being roving reporters for the evening, the list of famous people present was as long as your arm.

These included Goldie Hawn’s daughter and current flavour of the month Kate Hudson, John Galliano, who turned up looking like a topless Red Indian, Courtney Love and Elizabeth Hurley, although Liz’s new love, millionaire movie man Steve Bing, was nowhere to be seen. A rock the size of the Ritz was glittering on her finger and the actress was glittering, as she so often does, in Versace.
