Screen legend Sean Connery claimed
he was “not really” nervous when being
knighted at Hollyrood, but he couldn’t hide
his delight as he emerged from the
Edinburgh palace to a cheering crowd

The honour marks another milestone in the life of a man who grew up the son of a Wellington-boot maker and cleaner. Sean himself began his career as a milkman, moving on to French polishing before joining the Royal Navy. He then broke into the world of film and became a household name with his role as James Bond.

Later in his career, when the novelty of being 007 had worn off and he was trying to shake off the image, he was to say, “I’ve always hated that damned James Bond. I’d like to kill him”.
SIR SEAN CONNERY
stirred but not shaken as he receives his knighthood in his beloved Scotland

Sean Connery was dressed in full Highland regalia as he finally received the knighthood that had so divided Scotland’s politicians. Just a few miles from the Edinburgh tenement where he grew up, the former James Bond star knelt before the Queen to be honoured. As cool as James Bond himself, the 69-year-old actor said he was “not really” nervous, adding, “It’s one of the proudest days of my life.” Knighted for his services to drama, Sean emerged from Hollyrood Palace to a cheering crowd by the gates.

Asked what the Queen said to him, he replied, “She just asked how often I come up here.”
